Uplands Lifelong Learning Institute is pleased to announce Ron Johnson is leading a second short story course.  The last course Ron led was so well received and he has so generously listened to the requests for more. Details below.

 Ron Johnson is the course leader. Before he became a pastor, Ron taught English and American literature in high school and college. He holds several degrees: M.Div, MAT in English, and a Doctorate in English and American literature.




More Short Fiction

In this course we will read and discuss eight stories by three writers.  The first four stories are by Canadian Nobel-Prize winner Alice Munro: “Face,” ”Dimension,” “Runaway,” and “Silence.”  Then we will read two stories by another Canadian, Mavis Gallant: “The Ice Wagon Going Down the Street” and “Varieties of Exile.”  We will conclude with two stories by Shirley Hazzard who was born in Australia but became an American citizen: “One’s Own House” and “Cliffs of Fall.”  Meeting times and dates will be from 10:00 until 11:30 on March 26, April 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30, May7 and 14.  Weather permitting we will meet in the picnic area beside the Aquatic Center.  If the weather doesn’t permit, we will meet in Heritage.  Covid restrictions require that class size be limited to nine participants.  If there is sufficient interest, a second session with the same content will begin on May 28th and extend through July 9thEach week participants will be emailed a copy of the story for the next week and discussion-starter questions.

 Course charge: $10 for ULLI members; $20 for non-members. Checks should be made out to ULLI.  (Become a member:$50 annually with checks mailed to ULLI c/o PHCC PO Box 167, Pleasant Hill 38578.) Checks for this course can be placed in Cindy Stahler’s Heritage Hall mail box or mailed to ULLI at the above PO Box. One may also give the course fee directly to Cindy during the first session.
